First I would like to identify restless leg syndrome just in case this information might assist you or someone you know in better understanding this condition and the symptoms surrounding it.
Definition
Restless legs Syndrome or RLS is a condition in the nervous system that causes the legs to want to move. This can include other parts of the body as well.
Symptoms
The sensation can feel uncomfortable, “itchy,” like “pins and needles.” Normally it feels worse at rest.
Causes
- Genetics are suspected to play a role because family members often have RLS as well.
- Chronic diseases like iron deficiency, Parkinson's disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and peripheral nephropathy often include symptoms of RLS. Treating these often gives some relief to RLS.
- Medications including antinausea, antipsychotic, antidepressants, cold and allergy containing sedating antihistamines my worsen symptoms.
- Some women experience RLS in pregnancy, especially in the last trimester.
- Alcohol use
- sleep deprivation
Risk factors
RLS may affect 10% of people in the US, more common in women, and may begin at any age.
Often misdiagnosed or unidentified, but can usually be treated once correctly diagnosed.
Treatment
- Regular exercise,
- regular sleep patterns,
- eliminating or decreasing caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco.
- Leg messages,
- hot baths,
- heating pads,
- and ice packs may help.
